Purpose

The "Markets and Valuation" Paper Development Workshop (PDW) is a pre-Colloquium activity that aims to help scholars develop their papers in close interaction with leading researchers in the field. In addition to the "Creative Industries" EGOS Standing Working Group (SWG) 13, this PDW offers an arena for scholars sharing an interest in the field of Creative Industries, Markets, and Valuation to develop their ideas towards publishable research articles. However, more than in the regular SWG 13 and sub-theme 13 format, the focus in this PDW will be on small group interaction and pragmatic issues related to publishing.

This PDW is open to all scholars though preference will be given to PhD students and early-career researchers. Accepted papers will be briefly presented and thoroughly discussed in round table sessions with leading scholars in the field. All participants are expected to have read the papers of their fellow session presenters and be ready to contribute to their discussion. Participants will also be expected to attend all sessions of the workshop.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, 9:00am–12:00pm.

Theme

The paradigm of art worlds and the market paradigm are regarded as different, and often contradictory institutions that derive different orders of worth. While markets are economic exchanges that require commensurability, artistic and creative endeavors are characterized as a means of creating "singularities" (Karpik, 2010).

Creative industries, where these two paradigms intersect, therefore provide a rich context for research that deepens our understanding of markets, organizations, and institutions. Markets for creative works, with their subjective criteria of quality and value, are particularly appropriate venues for the study of socially constructed value and valuation processes. Due to the primarily symbolic nature of creative goods, a study of their production and consumption patterns can illuminate antecedents and consequences of power and status hierarchies within organizational fields. Since aesthetics are deep-rooted cultural elements, the adoption of artistic innovations can help explain how broad institutional change can be effected. The unique features of creative industries can thus be harnessed to generate distinctive insights into the workings of markets.

We invite papers in organization studies and economic sociology that engage with questions of social embeddedness of economic transactions, social and cultural bases of market exchange, and social construction of value. While the convenors of the PDW have approached these questions by studying creative industries, papers that address these issues in any market context are welcomed.
