The theme ‘Pragmatism and Organizing for Change’ of this sub-theme implies a doubled organizing: organizing for the conduct of change as well as organizing for the study of the conduct of change. In this talk, I offer some observations for participant consideration about how Pragmatism can shed light on this doubled organizing.

What has come to be called stakeholder theory can be viewed as developed on the philosophical ideas known as pragmatism, as well as several other philosophical traditions. Pragmatism in the more analytical sense refers to philosophers such as Dewey, Quine, Putnam, Bernstein, Rorty, Brandom, and others who may not identify with these pragmatists. The purpose of this talk will be to focus on Dewey and Rorty as exemplars of the pragmatist approach and its connection to stakeholder theory.
