Call for Applications
The progress of research in organizational studies relies upon the commitment and creativity of advanced PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and junior scholars who explore new questions and advance both theoretical and empirical work on them. They play an essential role in the development of EGOS as an academic community that critically reflects on, and examines a variety of, topics at the forefront of knowledge about organizations.
EGOS puts a special emphasis on supporting the academic development of younger scholars and their positioning and integration into academic communities. The purpose of this workshop is to stimulate interactions amongst the EGOS community members and reinforce dialogue within the community of organization scholars from different parts of Europe and further afield.
In particular, the workshop seeks to:
- Facilitate the academic socialization of junior scholars by offering information and insight into the behaviors and practices in the fields of organization theory, and the opportunities for a meaningful career there.
- Emphasize the importance and offer support in improving junior scholars' publication capabilities as a means of strengthening their publication record and contributing to the advancement of the scientific community. The workshop is a forum of exchange and dialogue between senior and junior scholars on scholarly writing and reviewing.
- Provide an arena for explorations of issues on the cutting edge of research in areas such as comparative studies of economic organisation, network analysis, innovation, technology and organization, etc.
The workshop is not a forum dedicated to junior scholars. It is
an active exchange based on a dialogue among junior and senior academics that seeks to strengthen the junior scholars involvement
with the EGOS community and help them in finding their way in academia.
Content & Format
The workshop is a two-day event (beginning on Monday afternoon, June 28, 2010) that precedes the annual EGOS Colloquium, thus allowing participating scholars to take part in both the workshop and the Colloquium.
The program consists of three modules:
- Writing for scholarly publications
- Shaping the agenda at the cutting edge of research
- Designing a post-doctoral project or a new research subject
1. Writing for scholarly publications
In this module, editors of reputable international journals will share insights
and practices on the art and craft of a scholarly publication. The module includes lectures, discussions and tutored group
work on the participants' proposals for journal articles. Among the topics covered are the academic journal article as a specific
genre of a scholarly publication, identification and development of the main argument of an article, choosing the appropriate
audience and journal for a specific topic, overcoming typical problems in writing an article, the role of editors, referees
and authors in the process of publishing, other practical aspects of writing and publishing, experiences with publishing and
how to review other colleagues' manuscripts (discussions within small group with referee).
2. Shaping the agenda at the cutting edge of research
This module offers insights into the state of the art and future development
of vibrant areas of scholarly activity. It consists of a lecture from a leading scholar in the field of organization studies
and a discussion of participants' research projects related to these areas. New methods such as laboratory research may be
3. Designing the next research subject
This module aims at exploring different ways
of designing new research subjects for post-docs and as a new faculty member. It also emphasizes the role of contractual research,
based on firm contracts or national or international call for tenders
The faculty involved in the workshop includes scholars from a variety of geographical and disciplinary backgrounds. Members of the faculty included in past sessions: Julia Balogun (Cass Business School, London, UK), Stefano Brusoni (Bocconi University Italy), Marie-Laure Djelic (ESSEC, France), Peer Fiss (Queen's School of Business, Ontario, Canada), Philippe Larédo (University Marne la Vallée, France and Manchester Business School, UK), Vincent Mangematin (GEM and GAEL, France), Amalya Oliver (Hebrew University, Israel), Sigrid Quack (Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, Cologne, Germany), Kerstin Sahlin-Andersson (Uppsala University, Sweden), Silviya Svejenova (ESADE Business School, Spain), Hari Tsoukas (ALBA, Greece and Warwick Business School, UK) and David Wilson (Warwick Business School, UK), among others.
To be considered for participation in the workshop, participants need to have completed their doctoral dissertation in the last three years and submit a single document of application that includes:
- A short letter of application containing full details of name, affiliation, address (mail, phone, fax and email), as well as a statement detailing the applicant's motivation to attend the Workshop; curriculum vitae;
- A detailed abstract of a paper (4–10 pages). The whole paper will be discussed during the workshop.
To make the workshop as useful and lively as possible, you will be asked
to circulate before June 10, 2010 the paper that you would like to improve before submission.
The application should be submitted by January 15, 2010 via the EGOS website.
The selection of participants will consider the scientific potential of the project and its match with the faculty's ability to discuss it and to provide useful suggestions.
Please note that workshop registration must be submitted separately from application and registration for the EGOS Colloquium.
Participants will be notified by February 15, 2010 whether their application has been accepted or not.
Given the interactive nature of the workshop, the number of participants will be limited to 25–30. Hence, it is advisable to register as early as possible.
Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to update their paper by June 10, 2010 (fixed deadline) via the EGOS website. Please also send copies of the submitted documents to Vincent.Mangematin@grenoble-em.com by June 10, 2010.
