The Ex-Monastery of Sant'Agostino, now part of the University of Bergamo campus, is one of the most evocative venues of Bergamo, and will serve as main location
for all onsite elements of the EGOS online Colloquium 2026.
Located in the historic Città Alta, the complex dates back to the 13th century, when it was founded as Augustinian monastery. Expanded during the Venetian domination, it became an important religious
and cultural center for the city. Following the Napoleonic suppression of religous orders, the monastery was repurposed for
military use, before undergoing extensive restoration in the late 20th century.
Today, it hosts the University of Bergamo’s Department of Humanities and offers a unique blend of historical architecturesuch
as cloisters, frescoed halls, and panoramic terracesand modern academic facilities.
Throughout both the Pre-Colloquium and the main Colloquium, participants will experience Sant'Agostino not only as a place
for scholarly exchange but also as a vibrant social setting. Networking moments, informal gatherings, and social eventssuch
as the cocktail in the cloisterswill take place within its atmospheric spaces, fostering interaction in a truly distinctive
environment.
How to reach the campus
The Sant'Agostino campus is easily accessible from Bergamo’s main transport hubs. From the lower town (Città Bassa) and the train station, participants
can take local buses directly to Città Alta, which stops close to the venue. Alternatively, the historic funicular offers
a scenic route to the upper city, followed by a short walk to the campus. Further details on ticket types, prices, and purchase
options for the funicular and Bergamo’s public transport system are available online.
For those arriving by air, Bergamo is served by Milan Bergamo Airport (Orio al Serio), which is well connected to the city
center by shuttle buses and taxis. Once in Bergamo, reaching Città Alta is straightforward via public transport or taxi services.
The elevated position of the Sant'Agostino complex also provides stunning views over the city and surrounding landscape, making
the journey itself part of the overall Colloquium experience.
